2. Hofstra Votes pushes voter registration ahead of upcoming deadline

With midterm elections rapidly approaching, students can register to vote with the help of the Culture for Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and Hofstra Votes. Students are encouraged to ask questions, check their voter registration status and make a voting plan ahead of upcoming elections in November. All CCE fellows and volunteers will be tabling in the Student Center and have received training on how to navigate elections and voter registration laws in various states.

This effort began on Sept. 14 and will continue through Nov. 2. The tabling will also include “specialty hours,” such as Friday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., to give students more opportunity to register and make a voting plan. Additionally, Wednesday, Oct. 26, is Hofstra University’s annual Day of Dialogue, and Hofstra Votes will be tabling from 9:40 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. outside of the Guthart Cultural Center Theater.

Important dates students should be aware of are as follows:

  • Friday, Oct. 14, is the New York state voter registration deadline.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 19, is the New York state deadline for requesting an absentee ballot.

3. Hofstra announces its Hofstra safety app

Hofstra University announced the launch of Hofstra Safe, a new Public Safety app in a schoolwide email on Sept. 29. “This app provides important safety tools and provides easy access to emergency procedures,” the email said.

The app includes features to connect students with emergency resources both on and off campus. There are phone numbers listed for campus security and Hofstra Public Safety, as well as for off-campus resources like taxi services, the Long Island Rail Road and the NICE bus for Nassau County. Additionally, there are interactive campus maps and a place to track the various types of Hofstra shuttles.

The app also allows students to share their location in real time with their friends or Public Safety. Lastly, the app gives students direct access to resources such as Student Health Services, the Title IX Office, Student Counseling Services, the Food Pantry and the Diversity and Inclusion Office.
