1. Campus rec extends gym hours

This week, the Hofstra department of campus recreation announced that they will be extending the hours of operation for the Hofstra Fitness Center beginning Monday, Oct. 17. According to a flyer posted at the fitness center, the weekday hours (Monday to Thursday) will be from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday hours will be from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with weekend hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hofstra students have advocated for longer fitness center hours for years and even created a petition last spring to support their goal. To some, it is only recognized as a small first step, with the long-term goal being 24 hours of operation.

2. Hofstra launches new safety app

Following the launch of Public Safety’s new app HofstraSafe, a workshop was held this past Monday, Oct. 10, by Public Safety and Student Access Services to teach students how to use it. The online platform allows students to access most public safety services right through their phones. Public Safety will be adding information for all large on-campus events in order to increase outreach and attendance. Additionally, there are one-click buttons for campus emergency lines, along with a campus shuttle tracker and a location sharing feature which allows students to send their location to friends via link.

3. Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen comes to Hofstra

This week at Hofstra, the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen food drive will continue until Friday, Oct. 14. The largest soup kitchen on Long Island is collecting non-perishable items on campus amidst their transition from serving hot meals to bagged lunch meals. Between March and September of this year, 26,000 guests were served more than 125,000 meals. Acceptable items include (but are not limited to): canned meats, tea bags, hot and cold cereals, baby food, baby formula and powdered milk. Donation drop-offs will be accepted in Room 221 of the Student Center. For any additional questions, contact Anita Ellis at anita.ellis@hofstra.edu.

4. SGA minutes for Oct. 6

On Thursday, Oct. 6, Hofstra’s Student Government Association held their weekly senate meeting where they passed two senatorial actions. First, the rules and regulations for Hofstra’s new external advocacy branch were established. Second, the number of voters needed to start the senate was changed. Hofstra’s vice president for student enrollment, Jessica Eads, also attended the meeting and updated senators on important details for student engagement. Updates for the individual SGA committee initiatives include providing a better lactation space, adding clocks into all classrooms on campus and extending the hours of operation for certain campus facilities. While the meetings of this meeting have not been released yet, minutes for past meetings can be found here.
